If your car has squishy feeling brakes, then the best way to clear the air of the lines is by allowing the brakes to bleed. For completing this job, you can use a brake bleeder wrench or a combination wrench that would easily fit in the bleeder nozzle of your car, a proper can of brake fluid, a glass jar which is properly cleaned and a friend for assistance.
Follow the steps mentioned below to bleed your car brakes:
- Find the brake bleeder screw which would be located behind each of your car brakes.
You can reach the bleeder screw easily by jacking up the vehicle. If you are thinking of crawling underneath, then you should lay down an old blanket or some layers of newspaper so that you don’t get dirty. One more thing which you can do here is that borrow a creeper from someone and then you can lie on and slide around with it easily.
- Search for a proper socket or wrench that would easily fir in the screw and would loosen the screw.
There are some wrenches that would easily fit into the bleeder screw and would prevent rounding the screw’s hex-head. These are known as bleeder wrenches. Just be careful that you do not break any screw or else you would require professional repairs. If it is struck, then you can spray some penetrant around the screw. Now after you have loosened the screw, then later you can tighten it again.
- On one end of the bleeder screw you should place a small piece of flexible hose and the other end should be in the jar.
To cover the end of the hose, you must fill the jar with a brake fluid. If you don’t have anything that would completely fit over the bleeder screw, then you can place the jar near the nozzle, so that if any liquid squirts out would simply land in the jar.
- Ask your friend to slowly pump your brake pedal a few times.
Instruct your friend to say “Down” when he is pressing brake pedal down and “Up” when releasing it.
- Now your friend has pumped the pedal a few times and is holding the pedal down, then you can open the bleeder screw.
If there is some air in the brake lines, then a lot of air bubbles would be there in the fluid. If you are using hose in the jar method, then you will be able to see the bubbles very easily.
- Carefully tighten the bleeder screw before your friend releases the brake pedal
It you will not do this, and then the air would be sucked back into the brake lines when the pedal is released.
- Ask your friend to release the pedal and wait for him or her to say “Up”
Repeat this procedure again and again by loosening and tightening the screw until no more air bubbles come out with the fluid.
- Now you will have to open the master cylinder and more quantity of brake fluid in it until it reaches the “full” line.
If you have to bleed your master cylinder, then it is the same thing as bleeding your car brakes. Make sure that you bleed it at the point where the brake lines are attached to the cylinder.
- Unless and until the air is out for each brake line, you must repeat this process.
After each of your car brake has bleed, then make sure that you add brake fluid to the master cylinder.
- Now once the brake fluid level is back to its fluid level, drive the vehicle around the block.
The brake pedal should not feel spongy whenever you press it. If you still feel that it is spongy, then you can check your master cylinder once again to be sure if it is full. Then you can always try bleeding the brakes one more time.
