What you will need

If you want to paint your car, then you must spare some days as it is a time consuming job. This task can be done both inside and outside. It is advised to use a shed so that you can easily avoid the elements. But it can also be done outside easily, all you have to do is to check the weather and take some other precautions.

The things which you will require are as follows:-

  • Wet as well as dry sandpaper
  • Masking tape
  • Newspapers
  • Spray gun
  • Air compressor
  • Paint thinners
  • Safety glasses
  • Undercoat
  • Enamel paint
  • Clear-coat lacquer

If you have a small car, then you will need around one gallon of base coat or primer, three gallons of clear coat and topcoat. If your car is large, then you must have one and a half gallons of base coat and around four gallons of clear coat and topcoat. The professionals would use less than this, but since you are a beginner and would require do to some practice as well as corrections, so you should need this much amount. It is always better to have a little bit more quantity than less.

Preparation

Clean your working area properly to remove all the dust. Check the area properly if you are thinking of spraying outside as it would not be safe to spray underneath the trees as some contaminants might drop on the wet paint. Then wash your car and clean the surface to remove dirt, grease and road grime.

Stripping

Start sanding in circular motions. You should sand all the corners as well as crevices with hand. You will get a perfect finish by sanding the entire car smoothly. This task is really time consuming as it would take around two hours to complete each panel.  All you have to do is to get a smooth, even surface by finishing it with fine and wet dry sandpaper.

Priming

The areas which you don’t want to paint should be covered with masking tape and you can also use a newspaper or plastic sheets. You must do this task carefully and avoid unsightly overspray. This can vary for different paints.

It is always a good idea to practice the spraying technique before you actually start painting. For this purpose, you can use a piece of scrap which is lying around.

Painting

There are some ratios mentioned on the paint can, so with the primer mix the paint with thinners are per the mentioned ratios. You can always apply the topcoat paint with some spraying techniques. It would take around 10 minutes per panel to apply coat. There would be some specific instructions mentioned on the paint can. Generally you will have to apply three to four coats of paint. Once you have completed the job, you can inspect it if there are some imperfections in it.

All you need to do is some practice and methodical approach, and then you will be successful in painting your car.
